A poem is an encrypted revelation
Unlike the Bible’s
Explicit honesty
Or at least that was attempted
Or at least we must believe
That that was the idea.

A poem is not a confession of love
Any more than a letter
Sent in morse code.
Shrouded in metre
Structure
Rhyme
It hides its embarrassment.

A poem is not a revelation at all
It is a safe placeholder
For face to face,
Breath to breath,
Speak.

Pause.

That unbearable moment before the answer’s clear.
